15 Jan Nakia Gales & Herman Jiminian: 2 Rikers Guards Set Up Attack on Inmate, Officials Say

Two Rikers Island correction officers face charges that they settled a personal score against an inmate by orchestrating an assault on him by a group of four other inmates and falsifying paperwork to cover up their role in the attack, officials said on Thursday. The four inmates were also charged.
The charges against Officers Nakia Gales, 39, and Herman Jiminian, 41, include assault, falsifying records and official misconduct for their suspected role in the January 2014 attack on Gilbert Bacallao, an inmate at the Vernon C. Bain Center, a five-story jail barge at Rikers Island nicknamed the Boat. Mr. Bacallao sustained “bruising and other injuries” in the assault, officials said.
The Bronx district attorney’s office said in a statement that the two officers recruited other inmates housed on the Boat to assault Mr. Bacallao after they grew angry at him for “a previous trash-talking session.” Prosecutors also accused Officer Gales of having ties to the Bloods, a violent street gang…” Read the full story from the NY Times HERE:
“This is a stunning example of correction officers conspiring with the very inmates they guard to use violence in settling a personal score, according to the charges,” Mark G. Peters, the commissioner of the New York City Department of Investigation, said in a statement. “There is no tolerance for this type of thuggish behavior. We will find it; we will root it out; we will see that it is prosecuted.”
